All neck, fury, and razor-edged talons, the War Ostrich doesn't so much enter an encounter as explode into one. Bred or broken for war — or simply encountered in its natural state of aggressive territorialism — this enormous bird stands taller than most warhorses, its small eyes locked onto whatever has made the terrible mistake of drawing its attention. Whether bearing an armoured rider into battle or acting as a roaming hazard in a desert or grassland hex, the War Ostrich instantly commands the table.
This is a Large creature, supplied on a 50mm round base — occupying a 2×2 square footprint on standard battle grids and towering over Medium figures in a way that immediately signals threat. Scaled to 28mm heroic scale and fully compatible with Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Pathfinder 1e & 2e, and all major tabletop RPG systems.
What you receive
One professionally produced resin miniature, cleaned and ready for basing and painting. The War Ostrich sculpt captures the bird mid-stride with its powerful legs braced and neck thrust forward in an aggressive posture, vestigial wings flared slightly for balance — an unmistakable display of threat. The figure arrives in its natural grey resin finish — prime and paint to your own colour scheme. All support marks have been carefully removed. Every figure is inspected before dispatch — any miniature that does not meet our standard is remade, not shipped.
Detail and quality
The feathering across the body is rendered in layered rows of fine, raised quills that transition from tight body plumage to loose, wispy flank feathers — a dream for dry-brushing. The War Ostrich's elongated neck is covered in short pebbly skin texture that contrasts beautifully with the dense feather coverage on the torso. Its oversized feet are sculpted with individual scale plates and pronounced curved talons, each claw deeply undercut to give satisfying shadow depth even before paint is applied. The small, fierce head features a sharp beak with a slightly open cast — mid-squawk, mid-hiss — and a pronounced bony cranial ridge that catches light at every angle.

Compatibility
Compatible with Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Pathfinder 1e & 2e, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Age of Sigmar, Frostgrave, and any system using 28–35mm scale figures. The War Ostrich is ideal for desert caravan ambushes, exotic cavalry encounters in a savanna campaign, or as the prized war-mount of a gnoll warchief or eccentric noble cavalry unit. Base: 50mm round base.
Painting tips
Start with a zenithal prime — black undercoat followed by a white spray from above — to lock in the natural volume of the feathers before a single brush stroke lands. For a real-world ostrich look, basecoat the body feathers with Vallejo Model Color Black Grey and drybrush up through Citadel Administratum Grey to almost pure white on the tips; the flank plumes reward successive light drybrush passes. The bare neck skin paints up brilliantly with Citadel Guilliman Flesh contrast paint over white primer, then a targeted wash of Citadel Reikland Fleshshade pooled into the skin folds. The legs and feet suit Vallejo Khaki highlighted with Iraqi Sand, finished with a brown wash to sink into the scale lines. For a war-trained or armoured variant, add spot colours in Citadel Retributor Armour on banded leather straps or barding elements — even a single metallic accent across the beak or talons lifts the figure from wild animal to battle-hardened weapon.
Care
Resin miniatures are more brittle than plastic — handle with care, particularly on thin parts such as the individual talon tips, the fine quill ends on the flared wing feathers, and the slender ankle joint above each foot. Store away from direct sunlight. Super glue bonds resin effectively if a part breaks.
Primed or unprimed?
This miniature is available in two options. Unprimed arrives in its natural grey resin finish — apply your own spray or brush-on primer before painting for maximum adhesion, which is the preferred approach of most experienced painters and gives you full control over primer colour and texture. Primed arrives pre-primed in a smooth flat grey, saving you a step and ready for base coats straight from the box. Both options are produced fresh to your order and ship from Ballarat, Victoria, Australia within 5–7 business days. Select your preference above.
Supplied unpainted. Images show the design and sculpt. Painted examples are for reference only.
