The Benchy Mimic crouches perfectly still, its barnacle-crusted hull and rope-handled lid completing the illusion of an innocent shipping crate — until those rows of yellowed, uneven teeth split the seam wide open. Somewhere between nautical curiosity and ambush predator, this creature brings a delicious twist of humour and menace to any dungeon encounter. Place it on the table and watch your players second-guess every piece of cargo they've walked past for the last three sessions.
This is a Medium creature, supplied on a 25mm round base — occupying a single 1-inch grid square and sitting low to the table, which only adds to its unsettling disguise. Scaled to 28mm heroic scale and fully compatible with Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Pathfinder 1e & 2e, and all major tabletop RPG systems.
What you receive
One professionally produced resin miniature, cleaned and ready for basing and painting. The Benchy Mimic features the unmistakable silhouette of a classic bench-shaped shipping vessel — complete with a ridged hull exterior, coiled rope handles, and a hinged lid that has been wrenched grotesquely open to reveal a cavernous, tooth-lined maw with a thick, curling tongue lolling outward. Pseudopod appendages emerge from the base, anchoring the creature mid-lunge. The figure arrives in its natural grey resin finish — prime and paint to your own colour scheme. All support marks have been carefully removed. Every figure is inspected before dispatch — any miniature that does not meet our standard is remade, not shipped.
Detail and quality
The hull of the Benchy Mimic is covered in rows of plank-like ridges interspersed with barnacle clusters and subtle woodgrain texturing, giving painters an outstanding opportunity to work with washes and dry-brushing across varied surface types in a single sculpt. The interior of the open lid is smooth and organic — a stark contrast to the exterior — with stretched, saliva-slicked tissue pressing between each individual tooth. The teeth themselves vary in length and angle, with some chipped or cracked, suggesting a long and enthusiastic career of biting adventurers. The tongue curls downward with clear anatomical definition, right down to visible taste-bud texture across its upper surface. The coiled rope handles retain crisp fibre detail that rewards fine-line painting.

Compatibility
Compatible with Dungeons & Dragons 5e, Pathfinder 1e & 2e, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Age of Sigmar, Frostgrave, and any system using 28–35mm scale figures. The Benchy Mimic is perfect for dockside warehouse encounters, smuggler hideouts, ship-hold ambushes, or any moment your players think the loot room is unguarded — it also makes an inspired prop for a puzzle encounter where the party must identify which crate is alive. Base: 25mm round base.
Painting tips
Start the exterior hull with a basecoat of Vallejo Beasty Brown or Citadel Rhinox Hide, then apply a heavy wash of Agrax Earthshade into every plank groove to define the woodgrain before dry-brushing back up with Citadel Karak Stone for a sun-bleached, salt-worn finish. The barnacle clusters respond beautifully to a stippled Citadel Nurgling Green over an off-white base, with a thin glaze of Biel-Tan Green pooled at their bases to suggest algae growth. For the interior maw, basecoat with Vallejo Pale Flesh or Citadel Kislev Flesh, wash deeply with Reikland Fleshshade, and add a final highlight of pure white along each tooth tip to make the bite look razor-sharp. The tongue benefits from Citadel Carroburg Crimson washed over a Screamer Pink base, with a gloss varnish applied selectively to suggest moisture — a quick and highly effective OSL-adjacent trick. Finish the rope handles with Citadel Zandri Dust drybrushed over Rhinox Hide, then a final dust of Ushabti Bone across the raised fibres to make them read instantly as weathered hemp.
Care
Resin miniatures are more brittle than plastic — handle with care, particularly on thin parts such as the extended tongue tip, the outer edges of individual teeth, and the fine pseudopod tendrils at the base. Store away from direct sunlight. Super glue bonds resin effectively if a part breaks.
Primed or unprimed?
This miniature is available in two options. Unprimed arrives in its natural grey resin finish — apply your own spray or brush-on primer before painting for maximum adhesion, which is the preferred approach of most experienced painters and gives you full control over primer colour and texture. Primed arrives pre-primed in a smooth flat grey, saving you a step and ready for base coats straight from the box. Both options are produced fresh to your order and ship from Ballarat, Victoria, Australia within 5–7 business days. Select your preference above.
Supplied unpainted. Images show the design and sculpt. Painted examples are for reference only.
